Understanding Loop Recording on Dash Cams

Loop recording is why a dash cam can run indefinitely on a single card. Knowing how it works explains why saving important clips is a deliberate step.

How the loop works

The camera records in short segments and, when the card is full, overwrites the oldest segment first. This lets it run continuously without ever running out of space.

Why clips are locked

When the G-sensor detects an impact, or you press save, that segment is locked and excluded from the overwrite cycle so it survives until you remove it.

The takeaway

Unlocked footage is temporary by design. If a clip matters, lock or copy it promptly before the loop reaches it.
