Dash Cam Power Options: 12V, Hardwire, and Battery Packs
How you power a dash cam affects convenience, tidiness, and whether you can record while parked. There are three common approaches, each with clear trade-offs.
12V socket
The simplest option: plug in and drive. It only powers the camera while the socket is live, so it usually will not support parking mode, and the cable is visible unless you tuck it away.
Hardwiring
Wiring into the fuse box frees the socket and enables parking mode with constant power. A low-voltage cutoff keeps it from draining your car battery.
Battery pack
A dedicated pack charges while you drive and powers parking mode from its own cell, fully isolating your car battery at the cost of extra space and price.
