A hardwire kit wires the camera directly into your fuse box, which frees up the 12V socket and, more importantly, provides constant power so the camera can record while parked.
The safety feature to insist on is a low-voltage cutoff: it stops drawing power before your car battery gets too low to start the engine. Installation is doable at home, but if you are unsure about your fuse box, a shop can wire it in quickly.
